HELEN P. YOUNG
Helen P. Young, possess over 20 years of experience in the field of education as a counselor, director and administrator.
Mrs. Young was born in Kansas City, Missouri, but as the daughter of a career military officer, she spent much of her early childhood traveling around the world. It was an invaluable experience which helped her develop a true appreciation for cultural diversity. Her family finally settled in Long Beach, California where she graduated from Jordan High School with her sights on higher education. Mrs. Young holds a Master’s degree in Education Counseling and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services & Adolescent Counseling both from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Mrs. Young began her career in education as a College Admissions Counselor for Northrop University in 1990 where she was responsible for outreach and recruitment of incoming freshmen and developed a love for counseling. She began her counseling career at Sacred Heart High School in East Los Angeles in 1991. In 1994 she became Director of Counseling and Assistant Principal at St. Monica High School in Santa Monica where she served for the next 6 years. There she distinguished herself as a “top notch” education administrator who designed and oversaw a comprehensive college preparation program for over 600 high school students. In 2003, Mrs. Young began working as an academic counselor at West Los Angeles College, where she is currently serves as the Transfer Center & Honors Director. She serves on numerous committees’ at the local, district, regional and state levels advocating on transfer related topics and issues.
Mrs. Young is the Executive Director of The Young Center for Academic and Cultural Enrichment, a non-profit foundation that provides educational and financial assistance to a diverse population of California youth. She oversees the organization’s youth training and development programs. She is also Founder and Director of the College Preparation Academy in Los Angeles, which prepares students for success in college and in life.
Ms. Young continues to believe that “education is the key to unlock the doors to opportunity and success, especially for those who are disadvantaged and under-served in our society.” She also believes that the pursuit of excellence is a lifelong commitment that will inevitably result in success.
She resides in the City of Los Angeles with her husband, William Allen Young and two sons Jamal a senior at the University of Arizona and Kahlil a freshman at California State University Northridge.
